CERT Respiratory Virus Policy

Respiratory Virus Policy updated January 6, 2026

In the CERT Auxiliary (CERT) program, our mission is to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people. To fulfill our mission and protect our community and our volunteers, CERT leadership aligns itself with the Santa Cruz County Department of Health and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) respiratory virus recommendations.

Masking

As of April 3, 2023, masks are not required on deployments, CERT exercises, and in-person trainings. However, CERT members with symptoms of illness (e.g., cough, runny nose, and/or sore throat) are prohibited from attending in-person CERT activities.

Also, we strongly encourage people wear a mask (surgical or better) when engaging in activities in close contact with others under the following conditions:

If you think you were exposed to a respiratory virus, consider wearing a mask.

If you are at high-risk of becoming severely ill, consider wearing a mask/respirator. For example, when you are in an indoor public setting. Or when you are traveling on public transportation.

People who are at high risk for severe respiratory infections include:

  • Older adults, especially those 65 and older
  • People with certain chronic or medical conditions such as a heart disease or cancer
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • People who are pregnant or were recently pregnant
  • People with disabilities

Wear a N95 or KN95 respirator for the most protection against respiratory viruses. Examples of respiratory virus infections are COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

For general information or if you test positive for a respiratory virus, masking is recommended. See Preventing Spread of Respiratory Viruses When You’re Sick for more details.

CERT members testing positive for COVID-19, influenza or RSV should mask, isolate, and quarantine per CDPH guidance and are prohibited from attending in-person CERT activities. Please refer to CDPH guidance on isolation protocols:
