Perimeter Monitoring for Active Shooter Training

Hello fellow CERT volunteer,

We need your assistance for Perimeter Monitoring for the Active Shooter Training Event

CERT and ARES members have been asked to assist at the Active Shooter & Casualty Response Training event sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department. We’ll be activated to help keep the training site safe and running smoothly by monitoring the perimeter and parking areas, courteously redirecting any unauthorized pedestrian and/or vehicle traffic that may inadvertently enter the area, and promptly reporting/communicating suspicious activity or other concerns. Communications will be via MURS and public service radios.

  • WHO: CERT or ARES volunteers with a current DSW ID (please bring it with you for your shift). This is a great opportunity for both first-time and returning volunteers.
  • WHERE: A local school campus
  • DATE: June 22–June 26, 2026
  • TIME: 2 shifts each day: 0700–1230, and 1200–1730

Duties (roles):

Shift lead – Helps the team have a smooth, safe shift by managing volunteer signing in/out, providing or assisting with the shift briefing, coordinating equipment check in/out, ensuring health-and-welfare radio checks are completed at the start and regularly throughout shift, arranging post relief as requested, and communicating issues with the primary Sheriff organizer.  Must be comfortable with radio processes and equipment.

Post Volunteer – Staffs one of six posts around campus, providing a friendly point of contact for anyone approaching the site, redirecting the public as needed, and reporting observations and activity via radio. You’ll also acknowledge routine health-and-welfare radio checks.

Note: this is NOT for signing up as a victim or witness role player. You can participate in both activities but not on the same shift. This year the role-playing activity is more formal and requires an application. Currently, application is not available. Check back at a later date for the application.

Thank you for volunteering — your support makes this training possible.
